2022 STEAM Big Award

The 2022 STEAM Big! Award recognizes individuals and groups who make up the coordinating team responsible for creating a truly outstanding Science Rendezvous event.

The coordinating team’s vision, creativity and leadership were essential in the development of a successful virtual event that ignited an interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), in their community and around the world. Science Rendezvous is honoured to have such dedicated individuals and groups share our vision and mission. As a part of a collaborative national model, event coordinators across the country will benefit and grow from these exceptional coordinating teams.

2022 STEAM Big Award Winner

Western University

The Science Rendezvous team at Western University embraced the challenge to STEAM Big! in 2022, going above and beyond to deliver an outstanding and engaging event that inspired kids and grown-ups to explore the universe through hands-on activities.

The event co-chairs assembled an exceptionally resilient and determined organizing team of 36 graduate students that would be the root of their SR organization, divided into 4 committees (Programming, Logistics, Communication, Volunteer Coordination) and a 2-person technical team to develop the Western website and phone app. On the day of the event, there were more than 350 volunteers, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members and staff.

After two years of online programming, the SR team at Western agreed to “STEAM big or go home”, and they did not disappoint. Their efforts resulted in 35 activity booths and 8 stage shows, covering a diversity of STEAM topics, which were presented by 21 departments, 8 campus groups and 12 external partners. We also saw the comeback of the INVENTours videos, which showcased the variety of research carried out at Western. The event concluded with a spectacular fireworks display showcasing the power of spectroscopy, and a public night with stargazing at the nearby Cronyn Observatory.

This year, the SR team at Western wanted to focus on sustainability and the environment. They partnered with the city of London to use ThirstStations on the day of the event to help promote water fountains and reusable water bottles as a clear and simple sustainability ticket. They also set up eco-stations with knowledgeable volunteers near the food trucks to make our visitors aware of small steps they can take to reduce waste. One of the key successes from previous events was the event mascot, Dr. Maddox, who was the central figure for the local Science Chase in past events as well. For this edition, her storyline was that she was recruiting a team of EcoHeroes, and the Science Chase represented her recruits’ Eco-Training.

In addition to their outstanding programming, the team at Western introduced two innovations this year: a Western-hosted SR website (https://sciencerendezvous.uwo.ca/) and a mobile app which allowed attendees to stay up to date with news and resources.

With over 4,000 visitors and 412 Science Chase participants, the event was a huge success, receiving extremely positive feedback from volunteers and visitors. Thank you for being true leaders and a part of the Science Rendezvous community. We are looking forward to seeing what you will come up with in 2023!
