The Science Rendezvous 2025 Community Champion Award recognizes coordinating teams who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to engaging and inspiring their local community by creating fun, accessible, and inclusive opportunities for the public to get their hands on science at their local Science Rendezvous events.
We are thrilled to recognize Science Rendezvous at Guelph Humber, in partnership with Let’s Get Together, as a recipient of the 2025 Community Champion Award!
Science Rendezvous 2025 marked UofGH’s most impactful and community-centered event to date, building on nearly a decade of participation in the national Science Rendezvous festival. This year’s celebration welcomed 801 attendees (a 37% increase from 2024!), highlighting the event’s continued growth and community engagement.
Attendees explored 48 interactive, student-led activities that brought STEAM learning to life through hands-on experiences. From VR-based crime scene investigations and anatomy puzzles to robotics demonstrations, planetarium shows, optical illusions, and sustainability activities, the festival offered something for learners of all ages!
A major highlight of the event was the continued partnership with Let’s Get Together, whose TechCollect and Tech4All initiatives diverted approximately 1,200 pounds of e-waste and provided 8 refurbished computers to families in need. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to making science and technology more accessible while also supporting environmental sustainability and digital equity in our communities.
Science Rendezvous 2025 also introduced two new awards recognizing outstanding community contributions. The Community Engagement Award was presented to the North Albion Collegiate Institute Robotics Club, a long-time participant in the event, while the Community Partner Engagement Award recognized the 22nd Toronto Scouts for delivering hands-on science experiments and supporting pre-event educational programming and badge-earning pathways.
The success of Science Rendezvous 2025 at UofGH was made possible by a 148-person multidisciplinary team of staff, students, volunteers, and community partners across all seven UofGH programs, Humber Polytechnic partners, and local organizations. Beyond engaging the public in science, the event also provided meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students, many of whom received Co-Curricular Record recognition for their contributions.
“This experience taught me about the importance of interpersonal skills in a real-world environment. It also gave me the chance to work with children, which was particularly beneficial for me because I would like to potentially pursue a future career in pediatric medicine. I plan to volunteer next year, if not earlier, and would highly recommend this experience to others.”
