Introduction
Oxbow lake in Coquitlam is a unique body of water that was formed when a wide meander of the main stem of Coquitlam river was cut off, creating a free standing body of water. This forms a unique U-shaped lake which garners the name Oxbow due its distinctive curved shape. For these reasons we chose to assess the water quality of this unique lake and to see how it differs from the main river.
Participants
A biology and an environmental science mentor from Simon Fraser University led a class of Grade 9 students from Riverside Secondary to Oxbow lake to conduct water quality tests and learn about ecosystem health.
Test Location
The students and mentors tested the water of Oxbow lake from the shore.

The science mentors and students had a great day learning about water safety and quality through experimentation and open discussions. Together the students and mentors ventured out for the day, conducted experiments, gathered results and discussed everything they learned.
