Happy National Volunteer Week!

Science Rendezvous would not be possible without our passionate and dedicated volunteers. Nearly 6,000 researchers, undergraduate, and graduate students make our namesake festival come to life every year, all across Canada.

Our volunteer coordinating teams commit nearly 8 months of planning to develop Science Rendezvous events in their community; often in addition to their full time employment, research, studies and teaching schedules.

We are looking forward to the eclipse on April 8, 2024, but wanted to share some important safety considerations:

👀 Never look at the sun with your naked eye! Make sure you pick up a pair of certified solar eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2:2015 safety standard.

☀️You can also view the eclipse indirectly by projecting the sun using a pinhole projector or box projector.

🕶️ Sunglasses are not the same as eclipse glasses. No matter how dark your sunglasses are, they are NOT safe for viewing the eclipse.

🔭 Do not look at the Sun through *unfiltered* optical devices like binoculars, telescopes, or camera lenses during the eclipse even if you are wearing eclipse glasses. Eclipse glasses are designed to filter out harmful solar radiation and protect your eyes. Optical devices can concentrate the sun’s rays, burning through the filter of your eclipse glasses and causing serious eye injury.

💬 If you want to view the eclipse using an optical device, like a telescope, you should attach an appropriate solar filter to the front of the device. You should seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a filtered optical device.

Did you know... On April 8, 2024, Eastern Canada will witness a total eclipse of the Sun - a once-in-a-lifetime event!

🌓 Solar eclipses happen when the Moon comes between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on our planet.

🌑 In a total solar eclipse, the Moon entirely covers the face of the Sun, causing the daytime sky to turn dark.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ Looking directly at the Sun, whether during an eclipse or not, can cause irreversible eye damage. It is important that you wear special glasses with certified filters (ISO 12312-2:2015) and acquire them from a reputable source.

We're thrilled to announce the winners of the 2023

We're thrilled to announce the winners of the 2023 STEAM Big! Award: Science Rendezvous Winnipeg - a collaborative effort between the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.

🙌 Over 450 volunteers took on the challenge of hosting the first in-person Science Rendezvous event in Winnipeg since 2019, featuring interactive booths, shows, and workshops.

🌌 Planetariums transported visitors through the stars, and the Juno award-winning entertainer Al Simmons added a musical touch with a solar-powered concert.

📚 "Discover Days", a two-day school version of Science Rendezvous, engaged 1910 students from 93 classes, 65% of which were from rural, inner-city, or First Nations communities.

🌳 In the spirit of the Million Tree Project, both universities also hosted individual events throughout the year!
